Meden Agan Agiortiko 2019
Earthy and Spicy.
Grape: Agiorgitiko
Region: Peloponnese, Greece
Papantonis Winery was established in 1993 by siblings Antony and Kallie Papantonis. The vineyards, situated just outside of the village Malandreni, belong to the renowned viticultural region of Nemea. This Agiorgitiko was grown in sandy clay soils at 230m altitude. After fermentation, the wine spent 14 months in French oak. Rich, full, and wood-forward, this powerful big red is primed for equally powerful red meat dishes.
Fundamental varietal and principles are adhered to and celebrated in this dry as Mount Kylllini tea in red wine. Papatonis is located in Argos just up from Nafpilon at the northern tip of the Argolic Gulf and their agiorgitiko is classically trained to merge into today's modern world of Greek wine. What a terrific bridge this lays out to gain an understanding of the Peloponnese aesthetic while knowing full well that modernity, clarity and transparency are fully etched into this wine. Do not be misled or fooled by anything but what's in this bottle and it is terrific stuff. Only the chalky finish reminds us of agiorgitiko from yesteryear. Nothing in excess indeed.
